Overriding Goals

For Engelska Skolans Pre-school Classes

 

To help increase each child’s feeling of well-being and sense of security

 

To help each child toward increased self-confidence

 

To provide creative learning experiences

 

To provide experiences that develop each child’s social development

 

To provide learning experiences in English so that each child develops an understanding of the language

 

To aim towards developing each child’s skills so that he/she is ready for our first grade.

 

To integrate the goals of our pre-school with those of our school and fritids.

 

To have a continuing dialogue with each child’s parents


2004 / 2005

 

Plan for Engelska Skolan’s Pre-school classes:

Pre-school will be three hours per day not including the lunch break.

1˝ hours will be in English and 1˝ in Swedish.  The Swedish time will concentrate on developing the language and number skills as stated below.

The remaining experiences will be in English. 

 

The Goals of the Program

 

Social and emotional

Children should be able to:

Wait their turn

Listen when someone else speaks

Show respect and consideration to others

Learn how to resolve conflicts

Work in a group

Practice leading and being led.

Appreciate different cultures, religions and languages

Take care of things that belong to themselves and others

 

Swedish

Children should:

Understand why it is important to learn to read and write

Recognize the letters

Develop a feeling for rhythm, rhyme, syllables and sounds of the language

Speak in full sentences

Retell parts of a story or an event

Be able to describe objects or events

Be able to follow simple directions.

 

English

Children should:

Be able to follow uncomplicated directions

Be able to understand every day English that is related to situations they recognize

Begin to attempt to speak simple English

 

 

Mathematics

Children should:

Understand why mathematics is important

Recognize and understand numbers to 30

Be able to put objects into categories based on size, shape, color, etc.

Understand concepts such as larger than, taller than, etc.

Be able to do simple addition and subtraction

 

 

Drama/Arts and Crafts

Children should:

Be able to speak/act in front of others

Be able to participate in drama games

Try different techniques and materials in arts and crafts

 

Dance and Movement

Children should:

Practice movement

Improve coordination

Try different dances

Practice relaxation

 

Song and Music

Children should:

Learn to enjoy song and music

Listen to different kinds of music

 

 

Computers

Children should learn to:

Feel at ease with computers

Use the mouse

Open and close a program

Use the most common functions of the keyboard

Use a drawing/painting program

 

 

Nature and the Environment

Children should:

Learn to enjoy and respect nature

Recognize our most common plants and animals

 

Society around us

Children should:

Visit nearby locations

Ride the bus and subway

Be aware of where they live

 

 

Traffic

Children should:

Learn essential traffic rules for their age

Learn to respect traffic
