Bilingualism:

In order to reach our language goal, Engelska Skolan Norr puts extra resources into the teaching of both English and Swedish. In preschool half of the teaching is in Swedish and half is aimed at helping the students learn to understand and speak English.

Our after school day care program is staffed by both native language Swedish and English personnel.

In the first three school years there are many half class and small group lessons to enhance language learning. Small group in both Swedish and English continue through grade 6.

In grades 7-9 students may choose Swedish Plus as their language choice instead of French or Spanish. Swedish as a foreign language is available for students who cannot follow the regular Swedish course because of their foreign language background.

Lessons such as computers, gym, music, sewing, crafts, and Swedish civics and history in the upper grades may be taught in either Swedish or English. In social studies or science throughout the school students are encouraged to use our extensive library to find resource materials in either Swedish or English. Math text books are available in the middle and upper school and are frequently used in class.

ESN’s emphasis on language learning achieves good results. Last year all our grade nine students having lived in Sweden more than three years passed the core subjects of English and Swedish. The three newly arrived students who could not reach the Swedish goals of the national curriculum continued their education in English medium schools in Stockholm.
