Mark Jesinkey
Week 51 ESN has now answered Skolverket concerning their inspection of ESN in February 2007. Below is a link to our answer and the measures that will be taken by the school during the coming months and in the future. Follow the link to read our response: Answer for "Skolverket"(Word document) Dear Parents, As you know on Friday December 21st at 10.30 we have the end of term concert. Parents are welcome to join us for the concert at Immanuelskyrkan Kungstensgatan 17. Pupils come to school at the normal time and leave for the church at 10:00. Parents can either come to school and walk with the class or meet at the church. Pupils need to be picked up at the church after the concert. If parents are not attending the concert, please notify the class teacher that your child will be going home alone. Fritids is open before school but then closes for the rest of the day (as is noted in the school calendar). Breakfast will be served as usual in the dining room 8:00 – 8:45. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays and hope that you all enjoy the holidays. Mark Jesinkey
Week 48 We are reaching the end of term and the days are getting darker (if only for 4 more weeks). Two big events coming up at this time are Lucia and End of Term. Lucia December 13th, will be a little different this year. The ‘Luciatåg’ will be visiting each of the lower school classrooms between 9.00 and 11.00. There will be a performance for parents at 09.15 in the lunch room and then its off to the classrooms. Grades 7-9 will see the performance during lunch at 11.10. We know this a change from our usually large Lucia performance but felt that we could try something new this year. The End of Term is going to take place at 10.30 Friday December 21st at Emmanuelskyrkan on Birger Jarlsgatan. The performance should take 1 hour during which the school and "Fritids" are closed. More information will be coming.
Welcome Back to school! I hope that everyone had a good relaxing week. Halloween and UN-Day were a big success last week. I would like to thank everyone who respected the rules of Halloween concerning weapons and blood. The costumes were great and the students had a wonderful day. Thank you all again. The walk-way between Tekniska and school is open again so getting to school should return to normal. The area will be a little bare until the Spring when the new planting begins and the area finished off.
Hello, I hope that everyone had a good conference on Friday and that all your questions were answered. As you have seen the walkway between school and Tekniska Högskolan’s train station is closed until week 46. Please refer to my previous message about how to walk from Tekniska. This is the last week before the Fall Vacation. School is closed week 44 and there are no classes but Fritids is open Monday through Thursday and Friday is a study day for the Fritids staff. Thank you
Mark
Dear Parents, As many of you have noticed there is landscaping work going on along the path to Tekniska Högskolan. The workers have shut down various parts of the walkway and as of Monday they will be shutting it down completely. This work will continue for about two more weeks until they stop for the winter. Their plan is to fill the area with soil and then come back in the Spring and plant all new bushes and plants. After having met the people responsible for the work they recommend that students and parents avoid the walkway completely during the next two weeks. We at the school recommend the following:
By using either one of these alternative walkways students and parents can avoid walking through the parking lots along Vallhallavägen. This route is fairly dangerous with cars and bicycles moving openly. This inconvenience as I said should only last through Week 44, with the normal walkway being reopened Week 45. Thank you for your cooperation, Mark Jesinkey
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Mesagi and all the students that showed up at the Demonstration Against Violence on Friday afternoon. The atmosphere was great even though the weather wasn’t. Thank you all that I met and those that I didn’t get to see for supporting this show against violence in our society. Developmental Conferences are all day Friday. There will be no classes but Fritids is open. Looking forward to seeing everyone then. This week we are going to begin strictly enforcing the school rules concerning mobile phones. Please make sure you have signed the form given out by the class teachers and encourage your children to shut off their phones during school and Fritids time. Mark J.
Week 41 Open House was a great success. It was nice to see everyone together. The Student Council made 3400:- Thank you Beartrice for all your hard work and thanks to all the parents who bought coffee and got a chance to mingle. Please remeber that next Friday the 19th of October is Developmental conferences. Please talk to your class teacher and the Swedish teacher and book times.
Below is a letter that was distributed at Open House. Please read it carefully and sign and return it. It concerns cell phones (mobiles) which have been causing problems at school . We ask for your cooperation.
Dear Parents, In the beginning of the school year I wrote a letter to all concerning the use of cell phones at ESN. We at the school understand that cell phones for children are an important part of everyday life Many children traveling long distances to school so is important for you parents to be in touch with your children either before or after school. Unfortunately during school and ‘Fritids’ cell phones have become a major distraction. Some examples of these distractions are:
· Students telephones go ring during lesson time · Students call each other or SMS each other during breaks for no particular reason · Students take pictures or films of each other during school time, with and without other student’s permission. · Parents call students during lesson time. · Students involved in conflicts or incidents contact parents before contacting staff members · Phones are not locked away properly and students leave them out were they can be stolen
All of these types of incidents are distractions for the students and the staff, and distract from our goal of teaching your children. The amount of time that this takes away from learning is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by anyone in the ESN community. While your child is in school you trust us to take the best possible care or your child and give them the best education we can. We must be allowed to do our job.
I, therefore state that from week 42, the following rules will be strictly enforced at ESN:
· All cell phones are to be shut off upon arrival in school. · Students with lockers should LOCK their phones away during the school day. · Students should turn on their phones only after their last lesson or ‘fritids’ has finished. · If students must contact home for some reason during the school day, that student must find a staff member, explain what the situation is, and call from the school phone.
Violations of these rules will entail the following consequences: · First violation the cell phone will be confiscated by a staff member and returned at the end of the day with a Think Sheet to be signed by both parents. · Repeated violations and parents will be asked to come to school and retrieve the phone personally.
Please sign below and return this letter to school as soon as possible acknowledging that you have seen this letter and agree with its content.
I __________________________ parent of _________________________ in class ___________ have read the following letter and agree to abide by the school rules for cell phone use.
Tack,
Mark Jesinkey Week 40 Hello, Open House is Saturday from 9.00 to 12.00. Students receive compensation for the day on Monday the 8th of October. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Please note that there is construction going on on the walk-way from Tekniska Högskolan. Children can walk to the rift of the Hotel and meet the path about halfway to school. As we receive more information from Östermalm I will notify you. Mark J.

Chess Day on Sept. 8 at ESN---- a huge success! SS 4Springare with Vladimir Poley and a multitude of engaged parents hosted a Chess Day Program at ESN on Saturday, Sept. 8th. As many as 100 people showed up including students, parents and the Chairman of the Swedish Chess Federation. The program included Egor Norlin who played a simultaneous match against parents, a Blitz team competition, a chess facts walk, video about 4Springare's chess trip to France, chess tournaments, lottery and prize giving ceremony. Fisher sliced pizza was served for lunch along with dessert consisting of Botvinnik Balls and Mikael Tals Muffins. The enthusiasm was allergic and talk is already underway about the next Chess event that will be planned. Ms J. Wohlner
Week 36 Nurse Eva would like to remind everyone that allergies are a serious concern here at school. Kiwis, peanuts, almonds and nuts in general as well as other items which are highly allergic should not be brought into school by anyone! It is important that we keep safe environment for all our children at all levels. Traffic outside te school has been much BETTER: fewer cars are stopping and standing directly front of the scho ad one has turned around in the driveway causing cfsding and a dangerous situation. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping a safe environment for the students. Please remember that Friday is Sports day for all the classes. Please make sure your child is properly dressed and brings lunch.
Week 35 There is alot of news and information this week so please read carefully. Breakfast Breakfast is now open. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 8.00 until 8.45. There is a buffet and the cost is 10:- per person. It is a nice calm relaxing way to start the day. All are welcome Traffic Safety Traffic outside school is getting very heavy again. It is unsafe to stop and let your children out directly in front of the school. Students and parents are crossing in places other than the crosswalk. Please park your car in the lot below and walk your children into school. We have almost had two accidents the first week where children cross unsafely and cars trying to go around the parked cars. This is for all our children’s safety!! http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1298&a=684257&maNo=-1 Pictures on the homepage All pictures of students on our homepage are anonymous. Many come from events that the students have participated in and enjoy remembering. If for some reason you do not want your child’s picture on the homepage please fill out the note that was sent home the first day and return it to your class teacher. The year has gotten off to a great start! We are all positive about the year and are looking forward to keeping this good feeling going! Mark Jesinkey

Dear Parents I would like to take this time to talk about two incidents that happened in and around school last Friday. On that day a student set off a firework in a garbage can and it began to burn. No one was injured and there was no damage. Mr. Munro and myself have looked into the situation and you will find a letter below which will explain the actions taken by the school. Later that same day several students set off fireworks in Tekniska Högskoan’s tunnelbanan station. Again no one was hurt but we would ask that all parents talk to students about their behavior to and from school on public transportation. We have spoken to all the students involved but would appreciate your help. Next week Skolverket is coming on Tuesday and Wednesday to inspect the school. Again there is a letter below which will also be distributed to each student explaining what they are doing while here. Mark Jesinkey
Dear Parents, Last Friday several students had been in the school during lunch break chatting. During that time one student lit a firework of some kind in a garbage can. The garbage can caught fire and started to burn. The Fire Alarm went off and the building was evacuated, no students were injured and no property was damaged. One teacher and Mr. Munro put out the fire. The students inside have been spoken to and noted and what we leaned has been passed on to the Police. Mr. Jesinkey and I met with the Police this week and took their advice as to how to proceed with this matter. We at ESN take this matter so seriously that the school has made a Police Report. On the same day, after school at Tekniska Högskolan underground station, a group of ESN students lit fireworks and were behaving badly on the platform. Their behaviour was dangerous and is defined as a crime according to the police. The Police are visiting our school to talk to many students involved in these issues. I have spoken to many parents whose children were involved in these two occurrences. The behaviour of these students is unacceptable. The parents of the students involved stand 100% behind the school in our actions. We appreciate parents discussing these issues with their children too. These incidents go beyond what can be counted a “joking around” – they were dangerous and a crime. Please talk to your child about their behaviour on public transport, especially if they travel to and from school with younger brothers or sisters. Our nightmare is for a serious accident to occur. Thank you for your support. Kind regards, Kevin Munro
Stockholms kommun.

Week 3 The downstairs ‘Fritids’ is now open again. Morning ‘Fritids will continue to be in Busy Bunch and Sun Kids, starting in Busy Bunch. Busy Bunch is located on the first floor between Kindergarten and the Kitchen. There is a ‘Föräldrarråd möten’ Thursday at 18.00 for class representative, in the staffroom. Please keep an eye out for the Kitchen newsletter which will be distributed on Tuesday’s. Mark J. Week 2 I would like to welcome everyone back after a nice long holiday. I hope that everyone has recharged their batteries and are ready for the coming term. As I write this the workers are finishing up the basement. It will take us at least till the end of the week to clean up and move things so hopefully things will be back to normal next week. As for morning Fritids; for at least this week it will remain in Busy Bunch, so make sure that you leave your children there. I would like to welcome back several members of staff, Mr. Thornton, Mr. Mesaghi, Ms. Jansson and Mr. Synes. We are happy to have you back and looking forward to the coming year. Please remember the new cell phone numbers for the administrative and support staff. Those numbers are in last week’s news on this page. Good luck and have a good term!
2006 Happy New Year to all! I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all of the hard work and effort that was put in during the past term. There were some memorable moments some good some not so good. We started the year with a flood and then had to close two ‘fritids’ sections. The move went well due to the hard work of ‘fritids’ staff, the teachers who shared rooms and home language teachers, as well as the students and you parents. Our Open House was a good day and we received a great deal of feedback so that next year we can improve it even more. The Lucia concert was beautiful as always. The play organized by Mr. Dubois and Ms. Rositis was a spectacular show with great acting and wonderful costumes and scenery. As for charity work Ms. Sanjeevi, Ms. Jahn and the PTA combined to raise close to 4000:- crowns for our India charity and the Food Drive raised a great deal of food products for the homeless here in Stockholm. Finally we ended with a great trip around the world in one of the best end of term concerts organized. It has been a fun and eventful term. The workers are hard at it fixing the ground floor and it looks like we should be back to normal during the first week of school. We should know by the 5th what the situation will be. In an effort to improve our accessibility we have re-organized our mobile phones so that we now have a series of numbers. These numbers will officially be in effect as of January 1st
Please make a note of these numbers should you need to contact us in an emergency. Have a continued Happy Holidays and enjoy the New Year. Mark Jesinkey Principal
Dear Parents It is time for a new Parent/School Council meeting January 18th at 18.00. The meeting will be held in the staff room in the main building. The point of the meeting is to take up any questions or concerns that parents have and discuss ideas for improving the school. This is not an open forum for all parents to attend but rather a meeting for the Principal and the class representatives. If you should have an issue you would like to discuss please forward them to your class representative or directly to me at least one week in advance of the meeting. Questions can be emailed to me at mark.jesinkey@esn.se. Sincerely Mark Jesinkey

Week 51 I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a wonderful term. We here at school have had a great time working with your children and helping them gain the knowledge and skills necessary in life. I hope that everyone has a happy and relaxing holiday vacation. It is a time to enjoy our families and we should take full advantage of it. Some important notes: Thank you to the PTA for their end of term present to the staff. It was greatly appreciated by us all. A big thank you to all the parents who donated and participated in the end of term bazaar for India. Between the sale and the play we raised close to 4000:- crowns. End of Term Concert is Thursday the 21st at 10.30. There is no school or ‘fritids’ afterwards. Enjoy the day! The next ‘Föräldrarråd’ Parent/school Council meeting will be January 18th at 18.00 please send any questions to be discussed to Mark.jesinkey@esn.se at least one week in advance. *Fritids’ is open during the break so please keep staff informed about if and when your child is coming. School begins again on January 9th at 9.00. Fritids is open the 8th Mark J.
Dear parents, I would like to thank you for a great turnout at our information evening. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Wohlner gave a insightful presentation concerning ‘Children and the Internet’. It made us all think about the what can happen on the Internet especially with our children if we do not guide and help them navigate this new and evolving form of communication. Sometime next week a handout from the presentation will be posted on our homepage for those of you who could not make the evening but are still interested in finding out more about sites that your children might be visiting. Please read the following letter concerning the move of Venus and Pluto to the classrooms while SISAB repairs the ground floor:
Dear parents, As all have noticed there was damage done to the first floor of the school by the rain in the beginning of the school year. Originally it was thought that the Fritids sections of Venus and Pluto could remain open while the first phase of repairs began and then close down for the final two to three weeks of the school term. Unfortunately that is not possible and starting Week 47 we will be forced to close down Venus and Pluto for the coming four to five weeks. We know that this will be an inconvenience to the students, staff and parents who attend those sections, but it is important that the area be fixed as soon as possible. The plan for the changes and move are as follows:
We are grouping the students from Venus and Pluto according to their respective classes due to the fact that it will keep the children in groups they are already familiar with and keep them closer to their clothing which will be hung up by their classrooms, minimizing the amount that they will have to move around the building once school is finished. We hope that the repairs go smoothly and quickly limiting the amount of time that we must have these changes. We hope that the repairs go smoothly and quickly so that we may return to our normal organization as soon as possible. Sincerely Mark Jesinkey
Week 45 Welcome Back ! I would like to welcome everyone back to school. There has been a lot of work done downstairs and the cleaning firm has completed the initial work. Fritids will be open as normal during the first part of the work, as they will be installing the floor in the back corridor of the school. This work should take four weeks and be completed in early December. Once that work is done they will move on to the Fritids corridor and work there. When this work begins we will have to organize our ‘Fritids a little differently and have alternate places for the students to hang clothing. We will come with detailed plans later in the week. Please remember that there is an information evening titled ‘Children and the Internet’ and will take place Thursday November 16th between 18.00 and 19.00. Food Group is Thursday morning at 7.45 in the cafeteria.
Week 43 This is the last week before ‘Höstlov’ and it is a fairly eventful week. Tuesday the classes will be observing UN-Day and Thursday will be our traditional Halloween party. Please remember that students should not wear costumes that have weapons or blood attached. As all parents with students in ‘Fritids’ have noticed after the flood in the beginning of the term there has been considerable damage to the corridor outside Venus and Pluto. SISAB has cleaned the area and now the area has dried sufficiently so that repairs can begin. Andreas Tull and I will be meeting with SISAB and receive a plan of how they intend to do repairs. A formal letter will be distributed this week to all parents with students in ‘Fritids’ outlining the plans of repair and time frame for those repairs. Please remember that next week there is no school and ‘Fritids’ is open Monday through Thursday. Please make sure that your child’s ‘Fritids’ section is aware of when your child will be attending ‘Fritids’ during the week. Mark J.
Week 42 Thank you for your participation in Friday’s Developmental Conferences. It is important that we meet and talk bout your children so we can better support them in their learning. This Wednesday there will be a planned Fire Drill for the students at 9.30. Thursday night at 18.00 is School Parent Council Meeting. Questions have come from class representatives. Looking forward to a good meeting. Please remember that next week, Week 43 there are two events, Tuesday October 24 is UN day and Thursday October 26th is Halloween. Both will be celebrated in the afternoon.
Week 40 We had a very successful Friendship Week and the Friendship Festival. The children had a great time and learned a lot about Friendship and Respect. Thank you to all the parents who came to Open House which was also very successful. It is always fun to see all the members of our ESN family together enjoying themselves. As you know the Developmental Conferences are on Friday 13th October. Please make sure that you have booked a time with your child’s class teacher. There is no school that day but Fritids is open. There will be an information evening November 16th from 18.00-19.00. The topic will be Children and the Internet (Barn och Internet). An information evening concerning sites that many children and students visit on the Internet. The first Föräldrarråd meeting will be the Thursday the 19th of October, at 18.00. Please send any issues you would like to bring up to your class representatives. There is a PTA meeting on October 9th from 17.00-18.00, with the following Agenda: På dagordningen: 1. Annika Week 37 We will be having Friendship Week all this week. There will be activities in the classrooms from Monday to Wednesday with a special day on Thusday where the entire school is onvolved. Please ask your children about things that they have done during the week. It should be a fun experience for all. Parking in front of the school from 8.30 in the morning until 9.00 is forbidden. The reason for this is simple -safety. There are many parents driving their children to school and a great deal more taking public transportation and walking in. With all of these people meeting in front of the school, a dangerous situation has been created. We have already had an incident and several near accidents, so please respect the following. I would ask that all parents dropping off or picking your children up follow these rules: • Do not park in front of the school. • If you stop and leave your child, please continue up the hill and use the circle at the top of the hill to turn around. Do not back-up in our driveway. • Do not park across the street or pull up onto the sidewalk. If everybody follows these simple rules, the area outside the school will be much safer for our children. We have negotiated with the city that parking fees in the lot just below school do not begin until 09.00. Thursday and Friday morning I counted at least 20 open spots that could have been utilized. Sincerely, Mark Jesinkey
Week 36 PARENTS: FRIENDSHIP FESTIVAL – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Would you be able to perform for and /or with the pupils to promote friendship? Week 36 is Friendship Week and we will have the Friendship Festival on Thursday September 21st: It would be wonderful if we could have some kind of entertainment to promote friendship for the pupils. If you have any ideas, please give them to your class teacher. I would like to thank everyone for their patience during the repairs to the basement SISAB should be coming with a plan when they will finish fixing the basement as soon as it is dry. Mark
Week 35 With the first week behind us routines are starting to set in. The year seems to have gotten on the right foot and calm is settling in. Please remember NOT to park in front of the school building in the morning when you drop your children off. This causes a problem for those students crossing the street (many cars swerve around the parked cars). The parking down below is free until 9.00 so there is sufficient time to get your children into school. Please respect this request. We had a big flood in the basement after the last big rain during week 34. SISAB has removed the flooring and is drying the area. They will contact us soon and repair the floors. This has not interfered with ‘Fritids’ and we do not expect it too cause too much of an inconvenience. We will keep you informed. Please remember the PTA meeting the 20th of September at 17.30. An agenda was sent home and is posted at various places in the school and on the web site. Mark
Monday August 21st WELCOME BACK ! I would like to welcome everyone back after a long beautiful summer here in Stockholm. Staff have been working hard over the past several weeks preparing for today. I know that everyone is anxious to get started and begin the new school year. Welcome back! There have been some changes that I would like to mention first being the new kitchen in Venus after-school. SISAB and the school have remodeled the kitchen which is also used for cooking for the 6th graders. It should also be a big lift for all the fritids sections that can use the kitchen for cooking. There is a new climbing frame in the school yard which is a big improvement over our last frame. I would also like to mention several areas of development we will be working on for the coming school year. As was mentioned the school has a new plan for meeting the demands of the new Anti-discrimination law. The plan will be posted on the website in the next week or so. The Quality Report will also be posted at the same time. Some topics we will be working on during this school year are more hands-on math and science, integrating more subjects, grades 1 and 2 will be doing more computers in their SSV lessons with ‘fritids’. More detailed information will be available once the report is published. The Annual Meeting for the PTA will be September 20th beginning at 17.30. The meeting will begin with coffee and then at 18.00 the meeting will begin. Please be there to support the PTA. This is shaping up to be a great year and I hope everyone is excited as I am to begin! Mark J.

News of the week Västerås Grade 4 Chess Championships This past Saturday were the Chess Championship for Grade 4 students. ESN was represented by classes 4A and 4B. It was a long day starting at 8.00 am. Saturday morning and after a bus ride to Västerås we were ready. Both classes were well prepared and although it took a while for the tournament to begin, class 4B got off to a fast start, wining most of their games in the first round. They continued their strong play throughout the day and finished off by taking 2nd place. Congratulations! 4A got off to a slower start but played great in the final rounds and although they were in 13th place after the 3rd round they jumped up to finish in 5th place through some excellent play in the final rounds. Congratulations to all the students in both classes for a hard fought and dedicated day of chess. You should all be proud of yourselves. Special thanks to Ms. Lambert-Poor Mr. Thornton and Mr. Poley who worked so hard during the school year to prepare the students and gave much of their free time to making this and other events possible. Thanks as well to John Denny who helped out making sure everything went smoothly during the day and finally thank you to all the parents that showed up and supported the students. Good job by all! Please remember that this Saturday is the Spring Bazaar. Looking forward to seeing everyone between 12.00 and 15.00 this Saturday.

Week 16 During this weeek we have been introducing both students and parents to what lies ahead for them at ESN next school year. Mr. Tull invited kindergarten parents to school on Wednesday evening to meet the after school center staff that their children will be having next year. Parents also got an insight into the different activites that their children will be taking part in at the center. Then on Thursday evening Mr. Munro invited the year six parents for an introduction to what to expect in grades 7-9. Here, the students will be having subject teachers and the emphasis will be on increased student responsibility. Instead of a class teacher each student will be assigned a teacher mentor who will provide guidance throughout the coming three years. We were pleased that the turnout of interested parents was good and that we could answer the many questions that arose. Joan Wohlner Week 14 News bulliten! 4A and 4B participated in the 4th grade semi-final Stockholm chess championship at the City Hall on April 1, 2006. ESN's two classes both succeeded in qualifying for the the final competition to take place in Västerås on May 13 where schools from all over the country will take part. All students from both classes participated along with younger brothers or sisters to make a total of 60 from ESN. Considering that ESN's classes had to play against each other as well as the rest of the schools both 4A and 4B were extremely proud of what they accomplished. Now on to the final and an exciting day at Västerås! Will ESN win the king back this year? JW
